This is a tube-style pouch with a handle. It can be used as a pouch for makeup items or sewing supplies, or as a pen case. The fabric used for this case is from the “Can’t Wait Until Night” series of “Nekono Textile,” designed by sculptor Sakura Hanabusa. The poses of the cats reaching for the stars and moon are quite adorable. The cotton linen canvas is perfect for making bags and pouches.

Design & Work:Satomi Takei

Fabric shown for this sample:EGXA-8800-2A-CA

Materials:

  • Fabric (Body, Handle, Tab): 110cm wide x 30cm
  • Fabric (Gusset): 25cm x 15cm
  • Fusible Interfacing (medium weight) (RakuHari Presion Interfacing): 50cm x 30cm
  • Zipper: 20cm x one piece
  • Plasnap Snap Button: 1cm diameter x one pair
  • Rivet: 0.7cm diameter x two pairs

Size:21cm (l) 10cm (diameter)

We interviewed Satomi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
I wanted to feature the design of the orderly aligned cats decorating the stars, thinking that a tubular shape will be perfect for that.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The circular gusset may seem a bit difficult to sew, but by making a single circle larger, it is easy enough to sew even for the beginners.
As the handle is attached afterward with a rivet, it keeps the round portion from being thick around the handle, making it easier to sew.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
When sewing a circle, please do it slowly, aligning the matchmarks for a clean finish.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
The tubular shape and handle make it easy to put the case in and out of the bag. With more room than you think, it is versatile to be used as a makeup pouch, a pen case, or to carry sewing supplies in. Enjoy making your original case.

KF: Thank you very much, Satomi! Here are sewing instructions along with step-by-step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

The botanical world endlessly inspiring

Artists Arounna Khounnoraj co-founded multidisciplinary studio bookhou with John Booth in 2002 to showcase their individual and collaborative projects. In 2008 they opened their bricks-and-mortar shop in Toronto, Canada.
Here is a special interview with Arounna about her creative work and her first textile collection with KOKKA, “Bloom by bookhou”.

Kokka-fabric (KF): Can you tell us about bookhou’s activities?

bookhou is a partnership between my husband and myself. I primarily work with textiles making production items such as bags and pouches as well as singular art pieces, quilts and home items. I work with a variety of surface design techniques such as screen and block printing, patchwork and embroidery. My husband makes furniture and sculptural items primarily in wood. We have also published a number of books focusing on different techniques and projects and teach related workshops in our studio and around the world.

KF: So far, you have created so many designs. What inspires you in creating your designs?

I find the botanical world endlessly inspiring – leaves, flowers and plants. I’m always working on botanical studies, whether actual samples gathered from walks around the neighbourhood, photographs or drawings. Because my images always start with drawing by hand, I like the imperfections and variations that happen when you repeat images. It’s similar to the combination of organic shapes that I see in nature. I find the same casual combinations and variations inspiring when composing with patchwork.

Paper Bag Style Sub-Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

You want to go out only with a small handbag, but you have documents to carry… This fabric bag in the style of a paper bag is perfect for such occasions. It is well-constructed and stands on its own, even with A4-size documents inside. The fabric used for this bag is from the “vintage komon” series. The tasteful small pattern goes well with elegant clothing. The 100% cotton sheeting is suitable for bag making.

Design & Work:Mioko Sugino

Fabric shown for this sample: (Outer Fabric) YPA-46010-2D

Materials:

  • Fabric (Outer Fabric, Pocket Body, Tab): 60cm x 80cm
  • Fabric (Lining Fabric, Pocket Opening Fabric (#9.5 Canvas): 60cm x 80cm
  • Plasnap Snap Button: 0.9cm diameter x One pair

Size: 31cm (l) 25cm (w) 10cm (d)

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
It is a lovely and elegant pattern with a classical impression of lined berries. With no specific pattern orientation, it is also easy to use! Taking advantage of the calm tone of the design, I came up with a sub bag that works well with stylish fashion.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
It is large enough to hold A4-size documents, convenient for school meetings and other occasions. The use of the #9.5 canvas and top stitches on the corners allow the bag to stand on its own.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
When applying top stitches on the corners, be sure to fold the outer and lining fabrics tightly together. The finished bag will be beautiful if the lining fabric is carefully sewn without being separated. In place of the Plasnap closure, you may use Velcro or magnetic hook. It is also cute to use a ribbon to tie the top instead of a tab.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
The pattern has a gentle look, so it goes well with elegant styles. It also looks great with clothes of similar color tones, or you can carry it as an accent with navy or other dark-colored garments.

KF:Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!
