Gathered Skirt with Yoke

Size: Length 70cm

People often stay away from the elastic waist gathered skirt as it makes you look loose and fat around the hips…. The featured gathered skirt with a slim waist reverses such notions! The secret is the yoke at the upper waist. Bold use of the large pattern from Echino’s new design, Blossom creates a great impression.

We interviewed Anriko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?。
Taking advantage of the solid texture of the fabric, I made a skirt with a soft flare featuring stylish bold motifs from one end to the other.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
With this much fabric up to the waist, it could look heavy, so I added the yoke. To accentuate, the waist is set high with shirring style use of the elastic tape. Adding the gathering at the bottom of the pocket prevents the hipline from looking wider, creating a slim vertical silhouette in the front.

KF: What are some tips for making this skirt?
The cutting process is easy as it is a rectangle with no fabric edges. The gathering is almost double the amount, and for delicate gathering, manually assist as you stitch by machine.

KF:How should we incorporate this skirt into one’s styling?
Change the tops depending on the season – darker colors up until spring and white or pale tones after spring. It creates a completely different look. You can enjoy this skirt for multiple seasons, starting right now.

We interviewed Masumi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
I came up with an item that takes advantage of the denim design with many fake pockets.

KF:Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The loops for the belt are added to give it a real denim look. The belt loops also work for the shoulder straps.

KF:What are some tips for making this bag?
You may find sewing the inseam a little difficult. The bag itself is pretty simple for you to try.

KF:How should we use this bag in everyday situations?
This time I used a wide cord, but you can make the strap with the same fabric. That will also look nice.

KF:Thank you very much, Masumi! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Sacoche (Small Shoulder Bag)

Size: 28cm (l) 30cm (w) 10cm (d)

Sacoche is a crossbody bag, originally carried by bicycle road racers. It is slightly bigger than a pochette bag. The featured fabric is from the Sukikirai Wo Nakuso (meaning “let’s not be picky with your food”). Carrots and green peppers, vegetables not normally liked by kids, are joyfully arranged. This bag with a not-too-childish design is also appropriate for a grown up.

We interviewed Masumi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
The design is cute but feels mature at the same time. So, I came up with an item that is suitable for both kids and adults.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
I consciously came up with “something easy” to make, perfect as an impromptu project. The inner pocket is big enough for your smart phone (iPhone).

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
As it only requires straight stitching, make sure that you cut and iron the fabric in a straight manner. This way, you can accomplish an easy sewing and clean finish.

KF: How should we use this bag in everyday situations?
Adjust the length of the shoulder strap depending on the user, and you can make it in a variety of sizes. The inner pocket can be smaller or larger based on your preference. Why not make parent and kid matching bags?
