This uniquely designed bag has pockets all around the exterior. The sturdy cotton and linen canvas fabric, Solid series from echino is used for the bag’s body, flap and handles. Only for the pocket, the addition of a double gauze from the SWEET BOTANICAL series creates a soft and gentle look.

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
It has a soft and airy look, and the pretty color and pattern generate a great feeling. I wanted to make a bag that takes advantage of the double gauze’s light and fluffy characteristics.
KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
For the bag itself, a sturdy fabric is used. The pockets on the exterior feature a double gauze. The bag has both soft and strong characteristics, a durable bag with ample room yet with a soft and gentle look. The gathering with the elastic at the opening and the tucks at the bottom enhance the tender feel of the gauze.
KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
When working on the gathering with the elastic at the opening, stretch the elastic to match the width of the fabric. Pull the elastic above and below the needle while stitching. You may find the bottom treatment slightly difficult as you need to fold a soft fabric and sew in a shape of an oval to match the bottom. The soft gauze will mask minor misalignments, so don’t be afraid when sewing!
KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
It will go nicely with a white shirt and long skirt, or a simple and slim dress. With ample room, it will be convenient for you to carry a cardigan as seasons change.
KF: Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!
◎Instructions
1.
Cut the fabrics based on the patterned dimensions.
2.
Fold the pocket fabric in half. Place the elastic tape along the peak of the fold. Stretch the tape so that the width will be 50cm. Baste evenly.
3.
Drop the needle where the elastic is placed. Pull the fabric/elastic above and below the needle as you stitch over the elastic tape.
4.
Align the bottom of the bag panel outer fabric and pocket. Sew the center and both ends. You can let the bottom to be loose.
5.
Make symmetrical tucks (3cm wide/1cm fold) starting in the center at the bottom of the pocket to match the width of the panel outer fabric. Make two pieces.
6.
With the front sides facing each other, sew together two pieces.
7.
Press the seam open and sew together with the bottom fabric.
8.
Repeat the process on the lining fabric. With the front sides facing each other, sew together the sides and piece it together with the bottom fabric.
9.
Adhere fusible interfacing on one piece of the flap. With the front sides facing each other, sew together with the other piece along the u shape. Cut the seam of the curved portion to 0.5~0.7cm. Make slits and turn it inside out.
10.
Fold the handle in four to 2.5cm width and sew both long ends.
11.
Fold the seam of the outer bag and lining bag. Turn over only the outer bag and layer it over the lining bag.
12.
Place the flap in the center of the bag and handles with 12cm span and tuck the ends in-between the bag fabrics for 2cm and sew all the way around.
