Pouch with Frills – Free Sewing Tutorial

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This versatile pouch can be used to store cosmetics, stationery, and other items. The fabric used for this pouch is “Viola,” a new pattern from Ayano Ichiyanagi’s textile series “yui.” The watercolor-like hues give it a soft impression, making it perfect for the season filled with gentle breezes. The thin cotton-linen blend fabric is slightly transparent, creating a light and airy fringe.

Design & Work: Satomi Takei

Fabric shown for this sample:EGXA-6426-1A

Materials:

  • Fabric (Outer Fabric, Ruffles): 30cm x 90cm
  • Fabric (Lining Fabric (#11 Canvas)): 50cm x 20cm
  • Fusible Interfacing: 50cm x 20cm
  • Zipper: 20cm x one piece

Size: approx. 14cm (l) approx. 21cm (w)

Instructions

1.

Cut the fabrics and prepare the materials.

2.

Adhere fusible interfacing on the back of the outer fabric. Cut the interfacing 5mm smaller than the size of the outer fabric. If using a thick outer fabric, the same size interfacing is acceptable.

3.

Fold both ends of the frill fabric by 5mm into thirds. Apply stitches at about 3mm from the edge.

Apply two lines of rough stitches (at 5mm and 7mm) on the frill fabric for gathering.

4.

Mark the bottom corners of the body and cut all four corners in the same manner.

5.

Gather the frill fabric. With the front sides facing each other, attach it to the body outer fabric (the one that comes to front) as shown. Leave 1.5cm open at the top on both right and left sides.

6.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the body and zipper with 0.5cm seam.

7.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the lining fabrics. Turn it over to the front side and apply top stitches along the zipper.

8.

Repeat the same process on the other side.

9.

With the front sides facing each other, put together the outer fabrics and lining fabrics respectively. Sew all the way around with 1cm seam, leaving an opening for turning for 7cm at the bottom of the lining fabric.

10.

Cut a slit along the corner curves, and turn the pouch inside out, using the opening. Close the opening and align the shape.

11.

Finished!
