This is a drawstring bag adorned with ruffles on both sides. The fabric used for this bag is echino’s [and]. A 110cm-wide fabric features five different patterns including floral, stripes and geometrics. It is a sturdy cotton-linen blend, a perfect material for bag making.

Fabric shown for this sample:EKX-98090-92B

Materials:

  • Fabric: 110cm wide x 110cm
  • Cord: 0.4cm diameter x 1.6m

Size:about 30cm (l) about 29cm (w) about 12cm (gusset)

Instructions

1.

Cut the fabrics.

2.

Apply zigzag stitches on the edge of the fabrics except for the attachment side of the ruffles. Fold to the lining side by 1cm. Apply stitches on the front side at 0.5cm from the edge.

Apply two rough stitches on the unfolded long ends at the finish stitch line (1cm from the edge) for both right and left for the gathering.
※ No need to backstitch for gathering rough stitches. Leave about 7cm of thread at the beginning and end. Use a different color thread from the main stitch thread for an easy distinction.

3.

Pull the two remaining threads at the top simultaneously to gather the fabric.
Pin the piece to the front side of the body fabric and sew together. After sewing the piece, pull out the gathering thread. ※ Place the ruffles at 1.5cm from the top and bottom ends.

4.

Apply zigzag stitches at both sides of the top opening fabric. Fold 1cm and apply stitches at 7mm from the edge on the front side.

5.

With the front sides facing outside, fold the opening fabric in half. Sew the piece together with the body. Repeat the same process for the other side’s opening fabric.
※ Press the seam down to the body side and pull up the opening fabric. Stitches on the opening fabric will be applied at the last process (step 9), not during this process.

6.

Make the handle.

7.

Attach the handle to the body.
※At the bottom side, fold the handle inward by 1cm. Align the ruffle stitch line and the edge of the handle fabric.

8.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the side gusset and front body fabric, followed by the backside, making a tube. ※Apply zigzag stitches on the gusset seam and press it down to the gusset side.

9.

Fold the top opening by 1cm with the pulled up opening and apply stitches all around from the front side. Apply single stitch line on the opening fabric to make an opening for the cord.

10.

Fold the side gusset fabric alternating left and right and sew at 0.5cm from the bottom.

11.

Turn it inside out and align the shape. Apply stitches on the front side at 0.7cm from the bottom.

12.

Apply stitches for 3cm at the opening side of the side gusset as shown to keep the shape steady.

13.

Finished!
