With a gathered body, this tote bag has a soft and fluffy look. The fabric used for this bag is from the KESHIKI series by textile designer Yumi Yoshimoto. The pattern “Office street” incorporates a series of buildings in an office district as its motif. The soft and stretchy cotton viyella fabric is perfect for dresses and skirts. The large, dynamic pattern makes it a stylish accent for curtains, throw pillows, and other interior décor items.
Fabric shown for this sample:EKX-4700-1B
Materials:
- Fabric (Outer Fabric, Handle): about 110cm wide x 60cm
- Fabric (Lining Fabric (#11 Canvas): 60cm wide x 40cm
- Rivet: 0.6cm diameter x four pairs
Size:35cm (l) 25cm (w)
Instructions
1.
Cut the fabrics and prepare the materials.
2.
Mark the stitch lines on the outer fabric for gathering and final stitch line using a Chaco liner. First apply rough stitches for gathering. Leave 1cm unsewn on both sides at the opening.
※No backstitches on gathering stitch. Keep 7cm of thread at the start and end of the stitch.
Use a different color thread from the main stitch so that it is easier to distinguish when pulling the thread.
3.
Pull two threads together at the top side to gather the fabric and make the width to be 27cm. Create the gatherings on the body except for the top opening and bottom.
4.
Apply two finish stitches between gathering threads using the main color thread. Top opening and bottom are excluded. Use the regular stitches. After applying the finish stitches, pull out the gathering thread.
5.
Repeat the same gathering process on the back side. Make two body pieces.
6.
Gather the bottom of the two fabric pieces from Step 5. With the front sides facing each other, sew together the pieces. Make both pieces to be 27cm finished measurement.
7.
Gather the top opening as well. With the front sides facing each other, sew together both sides. ※ Please be careful not to accidentally tuck the thread of 1cm end opening of the gathering from Step 1.
8.
Make the lining bag. With the front sides facing each other, sew both sides and bottom with a 10cm opening for turning.
9.
Turn the lining bag inside out. With the front sides facing each other, place it inside the outer bag and sew together at the top opening. ※ Before sewing align the gathering to match the size of the lining bag for a clean finish.
Turn the bag inside out using the opening for turning and close the opening.
10.
Insert the lining bag inside the outer bag. Align the bottom of the outer bag and lining bag. To secure, apply 1cm stitch from the front on both right and left side as shown (red mark in the photo).
12.
Sew on the handle from the front and attach the rivet to finish!
