Round Bottom Drawstring Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

  • Bag

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This pouch bag features a drawstring closure. Its rounded bottom creates a plump, full shape with ample storage space. The fabric used for this bag is from the NekoNoe series’ [Cat Crowd] design. Sophisticated cats are flatteringly printed across the entire fabric. This easy-to-sew 100% cotton-linen sheeting is highly suitable for bag making.

Design & Work: Yui Tamaki

Fabric shown for this sample: EYX-1800-1A

Materials:

  • Fabric (Outer Fabric, Handle): 110cm wide x 60cm
  • Fabric (Lining Fabric, Opening Fabric): 110cm wide x 60cm
  • Quilt Batting: 90cm x 60cm
  • Cord: 0.4cm diameter x 1.8m

Size: 28cm (l) (excludes opening fabric) 38cm (w) (opening side) 18cm (bottom diameter)

Instructions

1. Cut the materials.

Place the quilt batting on the lining side of the outer panel and bottom fabric, and apply zigzag stitches. When using the adhesive type batting, please use an iron to put the pieces together.

2. Make the opening fabric.

Fold the seam (1.5cm) of the shorter end in three and apply stitches from the front side. Sew at 5cm from the edge where it is folded.

3. Make the handle.

Fold the long ends by 1cm each and fold in half. Apply stitches on both ends. Make two pieces.

4. Make the outer bag.

With the front sides facing each other, fold the outer fabric in half and sew the edges. Press the seam open and fold it so that the stitch line comes to the center. Baste the handle and opening fabric.

5. Attach the outer bag to the bottom fabric.

Sew roughly the bottom side of the outer panel all the way around and pull the threat to gather the fabric. With the front sides facing each other, align the bottom edges, baste first and sew together with 1cm seam allowance.

6. Make the lining bag.

Repeat the same process for the lining bag. (No handle nor opening fabric. Leave an opening for turning.)

7. Put together the outer bag and lining bag.

With the front sides facing each other, put together the outer bag and lining bag and sew all the way around at the top.

8. Turn the bag inside out.

Using the opening for turning, turn the bag inside out and close the opening for turning.

9. Insert the cord.

Insert the drawstring cord and tie the ends to finish.
