Gathered Handle Tote Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

This compact bag features a gathered handle as its accent. The fabric used for this bag is [World], a textile born from a collaboration between illustrator/designer mumea and KOKKA. It beautifully depicts creatures coexisting together—birds surrounding the sun at dawn, deer gathering and guided by the sun. Made from 100% cotton sheeting, it is easy to sew and suitable not only for bags and accessories but also for clothing.

Instructions

Preparations

Cut the fabrics according to the measurement.

1.

With the front sides facing each other, fold the pocket fabric in half and sew, leaving an opening for turning. Cut off the corner seams and turn the pocket inside out.

2.

Attach the pocket on the front side of the lining fabric.

3.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the outer fabrics at the bottom and press the seam open.

4.

Repeat the same process for the lining fabric.

5.

With the front sides facing each other, fold both handles in half and sew with 0.7cm seam. Turn them inside out respectively. Fold it so that the seam line is in the center. Apply stitches at 0.7cm from both sides.

6.

Insert the waxed cord inside the handle. Baste it with 1cm of the cord exposed on both ends.

With the front sides facing each other, put together the outer fabric and lining fabric and baste the handles.

8.

Sew the opening side.

9.

Fold and match the outer fabrics and lining fabrics respectively. Sew both sides, leaving an opening for turning on the lining fabric side.

10.

Turn the bag inside out using an opening for turning. Close the opening. Apply stitches at the top opening to finish!
