Potholder – Free Sewing Tutorial

Introducing three different potholders. The fabric used for this potholder is echino's fir tree design. With its repeating pattern, the impression changes depending on where you cut it. This cotton-linen canvas is easy to sew and perfect for making small items.

Materials
  • Fabric: 110cm wide x 50cm
  • Fusible Quilt Batting: 60cm x 40cm
  • Fusible Interfacing: 40cm x 20cm
Size
  • <A> 18cm (diameter)
  • <B> 18cm (l) 18cm (w)
  • <C> 28cm (l) 18cm (w)

Instructions

  1. Cut the fabric and prepare the materials.

  2. Adhere quilt batting and fusible interfacing on the back of the pieces. For the quilt batting, it is convenient to use the single sided fusible quilt batting to help keep the pieces stay in place.

  3. Using a pair of compasses and a pattern making cardboard, cut out a circular (20cm diameter) pattern. Using the cardboard pattern, cut a round shape.

  4. Cut the fabric salvage with the fabric name to make a loop for hanging.

  5. Attach the loop onto the fabric side that you want facing back. For rectangular pieces, it can be sewn onto either the front or back.

  6. For squares and circles, with the front sides facing outside, fold in half the fabric with the interfacing attached to one half, then stitch along the fold as shown in the image.

  7. When layering the square and circle, be mindful to the order of the fabric.
First, place the fabric that will be on the inside.

  8. Next, on top of that, layer the front fabric where the hand is inserted.

  9. Then, on top of that, with the front sides facing each other, layer the back fabric.

  10. Leave an opening for turning (10cm) for each and sew all the way around together with a 1cm seam allowance. For the circle, make a slit along the curve. For the square, cut four corners. Turn the pieces inside out, align the shape and close the opening using blind stitches.

  11. Finished!
