Flat Round Pouch – Free Sewing Tutorial

This flat round pouch helps neatly organize small items like keys and lip balm that tend to get lost in your bag. The zipper is attached straight across the back, making it easy enough for a beginner’s sewing project. You can also turn this pouch into a bag charm by attaching a carabiner to the tab. The fabric used for this pouch is [we are cats] by fiber artist Kari Ishikawa. It is 100% cotton sheeting, easy-to-sew, and perfect for making bags and small accessories.

  • Double-Folded Bias Binding Tape: 1.2cm wide x 40cm
  • Coiled Zipper: 20cm x One piece

12cm (diameter)

Instructions

  1. Cut the fabrics and prepare the materials.

  2. Adhere fusible interfacing and quilt batting on the back of the fabric. Cut the quilt batting slightly smaller than the size of the fabric. Place it in between the fabric and fusible interfacing and iron the pieces to secure.

  3. With the front sides facing each other, sew together the zipper with the back side fabric.

  4. Turn it over to the front side and apply stitches from the front.

  5. Attach the zipper to the other side as well. Sew at 0.5cm (red dotted line) and secure the zipper and fabric. Cut off excess zipper.

  6. Adhere fusible interfacing to the tab.

  7. Fold and apply three stitch lines from the front.

  8. Attach the tab to the front side of the outer fabric.

  9. With the front sides facing each other, put together the front outer fabric and back side fabric with clips. Sew along the circle on the front of the fusible interfacing. Leave the zipper half open as the piece will be turned inside out later.

  10. Cut the piece into a circle at 0.5cm from the stitch line.

  11. Lining side

  12. Attach the bias binding tape. Considering the thickness, avoid the zipper at the start of the stitches. Sew slowly where the layer is thick.

  13. Bias binding tape is now all sewn.

  14. Turn it inside out and align the shape to finish!
