This is a drawstring bag made from a single piece of fabric without a lining. The thin material is foldable, making it convenient to carry as a reusable bag. The featured fabric is [sambar] from echino’s 2022 new pattern collection. Echino’s signature motifs, [sambar] and dot, are embroidered on a base of cotton linen sheeting.

We interviewed Satomi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
This fabric, echino’s reindeer series is a thin sheeting with very elegant embroidery, so I made it into a large bag.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
I cut the fabric while imagining where the pattern (the embroidered part) would appear on the final bag. The embroidered “echino” on the edge of the fabric was sewn onto the handle as a design accent.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
Since it only has one handle, a slightly wider handle makes it sturdier. The cord stopper can be substituted by sewing the middle of handle if you don’t have a rivet.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
Using a reusable bag has become a part of our daily life, and a thin, foldable type is especially handy. This time, I designed a new type of reusable bag made of a single piece of fabric. I think it would be nice to make it in a large patterned fabric with a rough-sewn look.

KF: Thank you very much, Satomi! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

1.

Cut the fabrics.

2.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the ends of the main body. Leave a cord opening unsewn.

3.

Press the seam open and iron. Apply stitches at 7mm from the edge to secure the seam.

4.

Fold the fabric at 1cm and at 8.5cm from the top as shown and iron.

5.

Sew all the way around in two locations shown in the photo. ※Apply stitches at the top and bottom of the cord opening.

6.

Sew the bottom gusset. As shown, fold for 5cm in the opposite direction on the right and left. Sew at 0.5cm from the bottom edge as shown.

7.

Turn it inside out. Align and iron the gusset and apply stitches at 0.7cm from the bottom edge.

8.

Cut the portion of the fabric edge with echino logo to your preferred size. Sew it on the handle fabric at 10cm from the end.

9.

With the front sides facing each other, fold the handle in half and sew together with 1cm seam. Turn it inside out and iron to align the shape.

10.

Attach the handle to the main body at 11cm from the center (cord opening) as shown in the photo. Insert it under the seam and sew to hide the handle.

11.

Pull it up to the upper side and apply stitches as shown (above and below cord opening) to secure the handle. Repeat the process on the other side. Please be careful not to twist the handle accidentally!

12.

Insert the cord and attach the cord stopper. To make the cord stopper, fold the artificial leather in three as shown and insert the cord. Using a rivet in the center makes it easy.
It can be easily made by securing the center with a rivet.
※Adjust the size of the artificial leather piece and rivet based on the size of the cord.

13.

Finished!
