We interviewed Yui about her creation:
kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
The cute pattern, studded with stars and constellations, is perfect for children’s preschool goods, but the shimmering gold ink makes it also suitable for grown-up use I thought. It has just the right thickness for a drawstring bag, so I made it into a convenient drawstring bag with a handle.
KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
To make the lovely night sky pattern look even cuter, I added plenty of ruffles all around it. A simple black tag and a black outdoor cord are used for the string for a sharper look so that even adults can use it.
KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
When sewing the cord insert opening, it is helpful to put masking tape on the sewing machine to use as a guide.
KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
The bag’s small size makes it perfect for a quick outing. I think the yellow star pattern against the white would go perfectly with a denim style coordination!
KF: Thank you very much, Yui! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!
Prepare the materials and cut the fabric.
Make a ruffle. Fold in both edges (short sides) by 5 mm, then fold in half with the front sides facing outside. Increase the seam length on the sewing machine and sew on the side that is not folded (seam allowance 0.5cm). Pull the lower thread to gather the fabric.
Make a handle. Fold the long edge inward by 1 cm and fold in half with the front sides facing outside. Apply stitch on the edges.
Attach the tag to the outer fabric and baste the ruffles and handle. At this time, sew the edge of the ruffle as well.
With the front sides facing each other, sew together the outer and lining fabric at the top opening.
Repeat the same process on the other side by basting the handle, and with the front sides facing each other, sew together the outer and lining bags at the top opening.
With the front sides facing each other, layer the outer fabrics and lining fabrics respectively. Sew the pieces together, leaving the cord opening and opening for the turning on the lining fabric unsewn.
Turn it inside out, and close the opening for turning.
Create the opening for the cord insertion. Apply two lines of stitches all the way around. Insert the cord to finish.
