The charm of this bag is a cut-out circular handle. When folded, you can also carry it as a clutch bag. Another nice feature is that it is reversible. The fabric used for this bag is from the “SPELL BY MIA” series. Cats with unique personalities cover the entire surface. The cotton linen canvas is perfect for bag making.

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
These cats appeared to be quite unique on the photo! Seeing them actually on the fabric, each one of them looked even more charming. In order to make the most of this pattern, I came up with a large square bag with the surface entirely covered with cat prints.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The charm of this bag is the cut-out circular handle. The bag’s shape is simple, yet it has a pocket on the inside. Taking advantage of the black color of the pattern, the opening is wrapped with black bias binding tape to give a crisp look.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
For the cut-out circular handle, it is best to sew the curve slowly. You will get a beautiful curved finish by cutting fine slits almost to the edge of the seam when turning the piece over.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
It is large enough to comfortably hold an A4-sized file horizontally, making it convenient for carrying files and other items. It is reversible, so you can use the black side for work and the cat side for fun.
Folded in half, it can be used like a clutch bag. Another fun feature is that you can see the cat through the handle window.

KF: Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Cut the fabric according to the measurement.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the top and bottom of the pocket fabric.

Turn it inside out and align the shape. Overlay the pocket on the front side of the lining fabric and apply stitches.

Draw a 10cm diameter circle on the reverse side of the outer fabric.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the outer and lining fabrics along the edge of the circle.

Cut out the circle, leaving 0.7cm of inner seam.

Cut a slit along the inner circle seam.

Put the lining fabric through the circle to turn the fabric inside out.

Repeat the same process as in Steps 4 – 8 for the other outer and lining fabrics.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the outer fabrics on the sides and bottom.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the lining fabrics at the sides and bottom.

Cut off corner seams.

Turn the bag inside out using the top opening.

Wrap the top opening with the bias binding tape.
