We interviewed Yuki about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
It felt different from the past echino line. Its smooth texture has a classy feel. Since it is cotton, I thought it would be nice to introduce a mask. I understand that more people are making fabric masks for coronavirus droplet protection.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
For pleating, you normally use an iron to score. When using a double gauze fabric, you may find it tricky as the fabric gets twisted when ironing. For this project, echino fabric is used for the surface, while a gauze material is featured inside that is in contact with your skin. Where there is a transition, it is creatively folded to keep it from getting too thick.

KF: What are some tips for making this mask?
If the width of the fold is not consistent, it may stand out, however once the mask is worn and spread, it should not matter much. Why don’t you make one and see what it looks and feels like when wearing? You may want to add a tab. Please enjoy creating your one and only mask!

KF: How should we use this mask in everyday situations?
It would be nice to be able to spend a day without wearing a mask, however it has become a necessity recently. Just like your clothing, why not select a fabric that you can enjoy wearing? Make it with a variety of fabrics so that you can choose depending on the mood of the day.

KF: Thank you very much, Yuki! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

1.

Prepare the materials.

2.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the top and bottom at 1cm from the edge.

3.

Press the seam open.

4.

Turn it inside out and iron to align the shape.

5.

Sew the top and bottom at 5mm from the edge.

6.

Put a matchmark on both right and left.

7.

First, iron the top and bottom to score.

8.

Where it is folded and peaked, layer it over the mark next to it. Pin it to secure.

9.

Make a tuck with the excess fabric in the center and pin it.

10.

Iron the pleated portion from the backside. It is recommended to iron with a cooking sheet or something similar in-between to give an extra layer.

11.

Baste the tuck at 5mm from the edge.

12.

Wrap the sides with a side fabric and pin it to secure.

13.

Sew both sides at 1cm from the edge.

14.

Turn it over.

15.

Fold for 1cm.

16.

Wrap it around and pin it to secure. Make sure to cover 2mm from the seam line.

17.

Stitch the edge to finish.

18.

Apply stitches in the ditch on the back side.
If using a commercial sewing machine for heavy duty fabrics, you may skip this step.
