Tent Shaped Pouch with a Zipper Handle – Free Sewing Tutorial

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This is a pouch with a long zipper as a handle. The edge and decorative fabrics for the zipper are accented with the same light blue color of the lining fabric. The fabric used for this pouch is from the “Sashiko Moyou” series. The design features small motifs from the sashiko embroidery, a popular old-fashioned Japanese needle craft. The moderately thick cotton linen canvas is suitable for making bags and pouches.

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
The pattern itself is very lovely, yet at the same time, it looks mature from a distance. For that reason, I thought it would work for a grown-up accessory! With that in mind, I came up with piece that has a sharper shape to reflect the mature character.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
To create this shape nicely, the featured zipper is longer than the width of the pouch. The extra length of the zipper is conveniently turned into a handle. The addition of the light blue fabric to the zipper end and loop acts as another accent.

KF: What are some tips for making this case?
When applying the top stitches, fold the corners of the outer and lining fabrics tightly together. If you miss the lining fabric, it will look slightly sloppy when the bag is opened. So please be careful when stitching.

KF: How should we use this case in everyday situations?
It will make a stylish statement when taken out of a simple plain bag! With a wide opening, it is easy to get makeup supplies in and out. Please enjoy making variations with wider gusset, height, and so on, to suit your taste.

KF: Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

Preparation

Cut the fabrics according to the measurement.

1.

Mark the zipper attachment location around the top opening of front side of the outer fabric.

2.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the outer fabrics at the bottom. Press the seam open.

3.

Baste the zipper on the outer fabric (Sew up to where the opening stops.)

4.

With the front sides facing each other, put together the piece from 3 and lining fabric. Sew together up to where the opening stops, slide the zipper to the inner side, and sew all the way to the end.

5.

Repeat steps 3 & 4 on the other side.

6.

Fold the fabrics again so that the outer fabrics and lining fabrics are folded respectively with the front sides facing each other. Sew the side where the zipper bottom stop will be placed (leaving an opening for turning). Please do not sew the other side yet.

7.

Fold the loop fabric in four and sew.

8.

Make the gusset at the bottom of the outer fabric sewn on step 6. Place the loop on the inner side and sew.

9.

Sew the other side. Make the gusset on the remaining bottom corners. Cut off the excess and apply zigzag stitches.

10.

Turn it inside out and close the opening for turning.

11.

Place the lining bag inside and apply stitches around the top opening.

12.

Apply vertical top stitches on four corners. Fold the side center inward and sew for 3cm.

13.

Fold the end of the zipper edge fabric for 1cm. With the front sides facing each other, fold in half and sew at 0.5cm. Turn it inside out.

14.

Insert zipper edge fabric through the loop. Fold and sew to secure.

15.

Fold the zipper decorative fabric in four and sew. Insert through the O ring and baste.

16.

Attach the O ring to the pull of the zipper to finish.
