We interviewed Satomi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
Making use of the double gauze’s tender feel and calm design, I created a drawstring bag for everyday use.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
A thin lace fabric is selected so that the gauze fabric can peek through the lace. By applying a different fabric for the opening, it works to make the bag look more cohesive.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
When making small items in double gauze fabric, it is best to use clips instead of dress pins, as the clips help keep the fabric aligned.

KF: How should we use this bag in everyday situations?
The drawstring bag always comes in handy if you keep one in your purse. Easy and quick to make, you can make matching bags for the whole family. Every time you touch the bag, you will find it comforting with the double gauze’s soft and tender texture.

KF: Thank you very much, Satomi! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Drawstring Bag

Size: 30cm (l) 24cm (w – at the top) 6cm (d)

This drawstring bag will make a perfect accompaniment for your outing during this balmy season. The fabric, line drawing, features a simple line drawing illustration against a white background, and has the right level of casual feel without being too cute. The many fabric loops made with the spare fabric can work in lieu of metal rings to complete the bag.

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
Clean and playful pen drawings of buildings make such an impression. The design is lovely yet not overly cute. Taking advantage of its character, I wanted to make a bag for a grown up.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The solid navy in the same color of the drawing makes the bag look sharp.
The rope handle drawstring bag is perfect for the upcoming season.
You can substitute the metal rings by using many fabric loops.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
The rope frays easily, so wrap tape around the edge tightly before putting it through the loop.
To avoid further fraying and for ease of mind, secure the tied knots by applying a craft bond.

KF: How should we use this bag in everyday situations?
A child can enjoy it as a backpack, and a grown up can carry it over the shoulder with two handles. The simple design goes so well with any kind of casual fashion.

KF: Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Depicting the beauty of nature and vistas in people’s memories

The Finland-based designer, Sawako Ura, launched her own textile label “kuiskaus” with Kokka. Kuiskaus means a whisper in Finnish. The whisper of nature is literally represented in the form of textile. Here she talks what is behind her design work.

va14_1

Kokka-fabric.com (KF): You moved to Finland upon finishing Musashino Art University in 2008. How did you wind up with that?

Musashino Art University was a place to pursue the method of self-expression from an aesthetic perspective. With my desire to continue to acquire advanced and more practical skills, I decided to attend the prestigious graduate school in Finland. I became enamored of Helsinki with its coziness, nice people, and the nature nearby. Since then and even after earning a master’s degree, Helsinki has been my base for living and creative activities.
