This tote bag can easily hold A4-size documents. The design is accented with a tape from the “NUNO TO MONO” series. It has a convenient outer pocket for cards and a smartphone. The fabric used is 100% linen, also from the “NUNO TO MONO” series. It is thin and easy to handle, and the more it is washed and used, the more it becomes soft and stylish with a worn look.

We interviewed Yui about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
It is a smooth and elegant linen. The simple and stylish colors offer options for many uses. It’s a wonderful fabric to keep in stock. This time, I decided to make a flat A4 size bag as we have frequent exchange of documents during this new (fiscal) season (in Japan). Even after many washes and uses, it can still be a stylishly worn tote bag.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
A handle tape with a logo is a design accent. The bag has a convenient outer pocket for cards, smartphones, and pens. You use exactly 2 meters of tape, and the end of the tape is hidden behind the pocket. It looks cute and is durable.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
To cut along the grain of the fabric, it is recommended to pull out a piece of thread first. If you are able to cut it straight, it will be easier to sew and less likely to lose its shape.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
The look of the bag is simple, so it’s easy to match with any outfit. I think it will also be useful as a sub-bag.

KF: Thank you very much, Yui! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

1.

Make two pieces of pocket fabric. With the front sides facing each other, fold in half. With the loop facing up, sew the bottom end.

2.

Turn it over and iron to keep the shape.

3.

Attach the upper pocket to the bag outer fabric.

Attach the handle (right side). Apply zigzag stitches on both ends of the tape. Place the end of the tape at the specified position and sew only the right side.

5.

Attach the lower pocket to the bag outer fabric.

6.

Attach the left handle (left side).

7.

With the front sides facing each other, sew both side ends. Turn it inside out.

8.

Make the lining fabric. With the front sides facing each other, sew both side ends, leaving an opening for turning.

9.

With the front sides facing each other, layer the outer bag and lining bag by inserting the outer bag into the lining bag. Sew all the way around the top opening.

10.

Turn it inside out. Close the opening and align the shape to finish.
