This plastic bag-shaped reusable bag is made from fluffy double gauze. It also comes with a carrying pouch. We interviewed Satomi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
This fabric with perfectly spaced embroidery gives a solid structure even for double gauze. I wanted to nicely incorporate the soft texture and relaxed look of the bear pattern, so I made a casual plastic bag-shaped reusable bag.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The fabric edge with the embroidered name was also stylish, so I left it uncut and used it for the gusset.

I have always felt that it would be useful to have a small pocket on the reusable bag, so this bag comes with a simple pocket. The carrying pouch can also be attached to the handle with a string so no need to worry about losing it.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
Double gauze shrinks, so I recommend to pre-wash in water, naturally dry and iron it before cutting, or if not, make it a little larger (about 1 or 2 cm), taking into account that the finished piece will shrink after washing.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
More and more people seem to be carrying two bags these days, a mini bag and a casual sub-bag (reusable-bag) (I’m one of them!). It would be fun to choose a reusable bag as part of your styling, depending on your mood or the weather. A double gauze reusable bag is cute and fluffy to the touch, so why not making your own♪

KF: Thank you very much, Satomi! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

1.

Cut the fabrics.

2.

Handle piece is cut to be tapered by 1cm toward the center. Mark the edge with 1cm fold line and apply zigzag stitches. Fold along the line and apply stitches from the front. ※Mark it first as the fabric may shrink when zigzag stitches are applied.

3.

Fold the pocket opening in three at 1cm and 2cm. Stitch preferred number of lines. With the front sides facing each other, fold and sew the sides. Apply zigzag stitches along the edge. Cut a slit at the pocket opening and turn it inside out. Fold the top portion above the slit to the lining side and apply stitches as shown.

4.

With the front sides facing each other, attach handles and pocket to the body.

5.

Fold the top opening in three at 1cm and 2cm. Apply two stitches as shown.

6.

Repeat the same process on the other side.。

7.

With the front sides facing outside, first sew the edges on the right side and left side. Then, with the front sides facing each other, sew the sides. ※Be careful with the sequence – Front sides facing outside first, then front sides facing each other.

8.

With the front sides facing each other, press the left side down to the front, and right side down to the back, and sew the bottom. ※The gusset size is the same as the length of the handle folded in half.

9.

Turn it inside out and align the shape. Apply stitched at the bottom from the front side. Also apply stitches at the center of the handles to secure it.

10.

Cut the fabrics for carrying case. Apply zigzag stitches all the way around.

11.

Sew the fabric as shown up to where it stops at 6cm from the top.

12.

Fold the opening at the seam, and apply U-shaped stitches.

13.

Fold the top opening in three at 1cm and 2cm, and apply stitches.

14.

Insert the cord and attach the cord stopper. After attaching the cord stopper, tie it to the bag to finish!
