Box Shaped Shoulder Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This kid’s shoulder bag is made for a game console. It is also compact enough for grownups to carry a long wallet, a smartphone, and other essential items. When used like a sacoche, its horizontal shape makes it easy to put things in and out. The fabrics used for this bag are from the “Natural+” and “NEO BASIC” series. Both fabrics have a super water-repellent finish, so they are stain-resistant. 100% cotton oxford.

We interviewed Satomi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
When I heard that it was a super water-repellent fabric, I thought it would be thick and tough, but it was sewing friendly, just like traditional oxford fabric. The alphabet pattern is oriented in different directions, so it was easy to cut without worrying about orientations. The fabric used for the side gusset has multi-sized stripes and plaids design, so you can use any portion of it. Taking advantage of its water-repellent nature, and with a quilt batting in between, I made a shoulder bag for children that is perfect for taking a game console with them on outings.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
This bag was made using an old shoulder bag I made for my sons when they were little to carry their game as a reference (it was a DS model back then!). The size is modified for the Switch model. An oversized gusset would make the bag difficult to use, so I designed it to be just the right thin box shape. I recommend that the zipper be double-sided for easy opening and closing.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
When sewing the side gussets together, stitch it slowly because layers add thickness in some areas.

How should we use this bag in everyday situations?
Adding an inner pocket for a game cartridge will make the bag even more convenient. You can also use it as a pouch without the shoulder strap. Why not make a pouch not only for kids but also for grownups with your favorite fabrics to store game consoles?

KF:KF: Thank you very much, Satomi! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

1.

Cut the fabrics.

2.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the side gusset and body.

3.

Apply stitches on the front side.

4.

Make the lining fabric using the same steps as with outer fabric.

5.

Using an iron, adhere fusible quilt batting on either outer fabric or lining fabric.
※For this example, the batting is on the lining fabric.

6.

Place the zipper between the outer and lining fabrics and sew together, with the front sides facing each other.

7.

Turn it inside out and apply stitches around the zipper opening. Repeat the same process on the other side.

8.

Fold the tab fabric in four and sew both long ends. Insert through D ring

9.

Cut off excess zipper and attach the tabs on both ends of the zipper.

10.

Turn the outer fabric and lining fabric to the reverse side respectively, and sew together the side gusset. First sew only the zipper portion with four layers, then put together the outer and lining fabrics as shown and sew respectively.

11.

For both outer fabric and lining fabric, sew the side portion to make a square shape. Press down zthe seam to the bottom side.

12.

Turn it inside out, close the opening for turning and align the shape. Finished!
