Vest Style Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This unique bag can be worn like a vest. It comes with pockets that are handy as you wear this while working. The fabric used for this bag, “patch,” is from echino’s second brand series, which incorporates a combination of various shapes into its design. The inorganic motifs and main use of cold color tones make it genderless and versatile to use. The firm, structured cotton linen canvas fabric can be used for a wide range of items, including aprons, throw pillow covers, and small accessories, not to mention bags.

We interviewed Yui about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
Both the pattern and the color tones give a sharp impression that would be suitable for men. The pink color of the “patch” chosen for this project has a stylish gray-like tone. I wanted to make an item that could be used as a unisex piece.

KF:Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
I thought of making something fashionable, yet still be useful…. This piece has a casual shape like a fishing vest, and the pockets are convenient to use while working. When the zipper is closed, it can be used as a bag, making it a fun design.

KF:What are some tips for making this piece?
The curved lines in the pattern can be drawn freehand as long as they are symmetrical. You can also draw them using a lid of a pot or a plate! Some people may find sewing curves and attaching a zipper difficult, but there are not many processes involved, so it is relatively quick and easy to make this piece.

KF:How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
It has a fashionable look whether worn as vest with convenient pockets or used as an everyday bag.

KF:Thank you very much, Yui! Here are sewing instructions along with step-by-step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

1.

Fold the pocket opening side in three and apply stitches. Cut off excess seam.

2.

Apply zigzag stitches on the short end of the pocket opening. Fold the seam for 1cm to the lining side and attach it to the main body.

3.

Insert the PP tape (cut to 4cm) through the rectangle buckle and fold in half.

4.

Baste the PP tape on the main body.

5.

With the front sides facing each other, place the zipper, keeping it 1cm away from the center.

6.

Baste with 0.5cm seam. Fold the top end of the zipper to the outer side. Repeat the same process on the other side.

7.

Leave the rectangle buckle outside, and fold the seam for 1cm.

8.

Turn it over and apply edge stitches where the PP tape is attached.

9.

Close the opening for turning.

10.

Insert the longer PP tape through the slide adjuster and connect it with the rectangle buckle to finish!
