*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This two-way bag can be used as either a handbag or a clutch bag, depending on how you close the flap. The fabric used for this bag is from the Circus Night by Sanae Sugimoto, a painter with an attractive delicate touch and fantastical interpretation drawn in India ink. The slightly thin cotton linen sheeting is suitable not only for bags, but also for dresses, skirts, blouses, and other clothing and interior décor items.

Design & Work:Mioko Sugino

Fabric shown for this sample:EGXA-9200-2D

Materials:

  • Fabric (Outer Fabric): 80cm x 25cm
  • Fabric (Lining Fabric, Bottom Fabric, Handle, Flap): 100cm x 50cm
  • Plasnap Button: 1.3cm diameter x One pair

Size: 19cm (l) 34cm (w-at opening) 24cm (bottom) 10cm (gusset)

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:

Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
The designs are so lovely, yet it is also a cool and stylish fabric. It is delicate as well as bold!
It also has a nostalgic touch to it. I wanted to convey the sense of these designs, while at the same time giving them a softness, so I decided to make a bag that can be used in two ways.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The flap for the bag’s closure can turn this bag into two styles – a handbag if placed under the handle, or as a clutch if placed over the top. You can use it in different ways depending on your mood and styling.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
When sewing the bottom fabric and sides together, make a slit before sewing. When you reach the corner, turn 90 degrees tightly and straighten the edge before sewing for a sharp looking corner.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
You can use it as a handbag for a feminine fashion, or a clutch bag for a cooler styling. This time, I used the fabric as it is to create a softer look, but if you want to make it more structured, then you can add an interfacing or a quilt batting. Using a canvas fabric for the lining also creates a firmer look.

KF: Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Fabric shown for this sample:EQX-28010-1A(Red Case)
EQX-28010-1B(Blue Case)

Materials:

  • Fabric: 70cm x 50cm
  • Flat Knit Zipper: 40cm x one piece
  • Snap: 0.9cm diameter x one pair

Size: 12cm (diameter) 41cm (l) (for 90cm x 130cm size blanket)

We interviewed Yui about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
Stylish and impactful, it is indeed the Grand Prize winner! I am quite impressed with the design. This fabric would be perfect as a wall décor piece, or to make a large bag or cushion. I wanted something that would be suitable for the coming season and for at home and outside use, so I made a blanket case that can be used as a napping pillow or a lumber support cushion for driving.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
It is large enough to easily hold a frequently used small throw and blankets. The handle makes it convenient to carry during your outing. Another point to note is that the zipper is concealed so as not to touch your face when used as a pillow.

KF: What are some tips for making this case?
While the sharp circular curve is a little difficult to sew, if you do not force or pull the fabric, and sew carefully by frequently adjusting the machine’s presser, you will achieve a beautiful finish.

KF: How should we use this case in everyday situations?
A 100 x 150 cm size blanket, when folded in three and then rolled, should fit perfectly. This lovely case will definitely come in handy for napping at home as well as for camping, picnics, driving, and cherry blossom viewing.

KF: Thank you very much, Yui! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!
