Today’s project is a teardrop shaped smart phone case made with puchi puri, a tiny print series perfect for making small items. The featured fabric, puchi wood, has a Scandinavian feel with such lovely animals and mushrooms. The two colors, blue signifies summer, whereas the purple signifies winter.
Kanae Nakayama, who is known for her sense of stylish combination of patterns, is here to introduce her creation. If you are particular about choosing the perfect fabric combination, don’t miss “Kanae’s tips for selecting the perfect pattern!”

We interviewed Kanae about her creation:
KF Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
The fabric has a slight Scandinavian feel with such lovely animals and mushrooms. I used blue, picturing the Scandinavian summer in the woods. The purple reminded me of the winter forest in Scandinavia. To avoid making it too cute and a kid’s only item, I selected a modestly sweet combination of the fabrics. This way a mature woman can carry it around as well.
KF:Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The iPhone 6 fits perfectly. A snap is added at the opening to prevent slipping. To make the design stand out, the embellishment is kept to a minimum. The teardrop shape adds warmth, making the design personal. To come up with the perfect curve, I made several samples. My heart and soul were in it.
KF:What are some tips for making this case?
When sewing the rick rack tape, I manually operate the sewing machine stitch by stitch for about 5 – 10mm until the machine can maneuver the fabric. Otherwise, a thick layer of fabric and tape could get stuck in the beginning and end up stitching the same place over and over.
KF:How should we use this case in everyday situations?
The leather handle is removable so that you can hook it on the handle of a bag. In place of a handle, you can use a long leather cord (about 120cm) with a “D” ring to make a pochette.
KF: Thank you very much, Kanae! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!
