We interviewed Yuki about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
It is sturdy with a certain thickness and very stylish with a chic monotone color arrangement. I thought it would go well with any type of wardrobe. Leveraging the fabric’s design, I came up with a long and slim backpack. The finished piece is elegant and exactly what I had in mind. As soon as you finish making, you immediately want to use it. This fabric will definitely looks great as a clothing piece.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The backpack is very convenient for an outing as your arms are free. A PET bottle perfectly fits in the large outer pockets. While designing, what I had in mind was the look of the bag when it is stuffed with items inside.

KF:What are some tips for making this backpack?
The shoulder strap is set longer so that you can adjust it to your liking.

KF: How should we use this backpack in everyday situations?
The design is such that it can be adjusted based on the height, and the children will be happy to carry this. I hope many people enjoy making and using this backpack.

Instructions

1.
1_b
Cut the fabrics.

2.
2
Fold the strap in four and sew both ends.

3.
3
Cut off the end of the shoulder strap from Step 2 by 12cm. Put them through two 4cm D rings to make a loop. Baste it at 5mm from the edge.

4.
4
With the front sides facing each other, sew the pocket opening. Turn it over and apply two stitch lines at the edge of the top opening (at 2mm and 8mm from the edge).

5.
5
Place the pocket over the front of the outer fabric. Run stitches in the center for pocket division. Baste the bottom end at 5mm from the bottom edge.

6.
6
Baste the shoulder strap at 4cm on each side from the center of the opening fabric.

7.
7
With the front sides facing each other, attach the opening fabric to the back fabric. Place it at 4cm from the top and stitch line should be at 2cm from the opening fabric edge.

8.
8
Turn it over and run stitches at the edge. Sew it again at 8mm from the edge, creating two stitch lines.

9.
9
Baste the D ring loop from Step 3 at 3cm from the edge.

10.
10
Piece together the fabrics from Step 5 and 9 with the bottom fabric in the center. Apply stitching at the edge.

11.
11
Put a marking on both sides at 4cm from the end. As shown, place the zipper on the fabric using the pin so that the end portions won’t be accidentally sewn onto the fabric. Only sew the top end at 5mm from the edge.

12.
12
Layer the lining fabric over and sew at 7mm from the edge.

13.
13
Once finished sewing, you will have extra portions on both ends.

14.
14
Turn is over to show the lining side. Spread the fabric and sew both ends, leaving an opening for turning. When doing this process, fold the bottom outer fabric for 6cm first and sew.

15.
15
Cut off the bottom corner of the lining fabric.

16.
16
Sew the gusset.

17.
17
Sew only for 1cm from the lining fabric’s stitch line. Make a 1.5cm opening for a wire frame.

18.
18
Turn it over using the opening for turning. Align the zipper opening. Run stitches at the edge of the zipper and sew again at 2.5cm below the first stitch line. This opening is like the opening for a cord of a drawstring bag.

19.
19
Close the other side of the opening so that the wire won’t penetrate. Put the wire through and close the opening.

20.
20
Finish the ends of the zipper and shoulder strap by wrapping with a small piece of fabric.
Close the opening for turning and finish.
