Round Bottom Backpack

Size: 40cm (l) 18cm (bottom diameter)

This stylish backpack is a great complement for a daily casual style of grownup ladies.
Perfect for bag making, a medium thick #10 oxford fabric is from the jimon series. The bag with a design of English letters is accented by a pocket featuring star patterns. Another detail to note is the thin shoulder strap, allowing you to use this as a one-handle tote bag!

We interviewed Anriko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
It is a sturdy oxford fabric. This material is really suited for bag making. Additionally, it has an American vintage-like print! Though grownup ladies tend to stay away from a backpack, I ventured to try for this project. You can make it look truly stylish by incorporating the rough feel.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The backpack tends to be a difficult piece to make, but this one is structured simply. The shape also keeps in mind the usability and security. By putting the shoulder strap through the rectangle ring, the top gets closed.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
For this fabric with medium thickness, I recommend using the needles for thick fabric to avoid needle breakage while sewing. For a more stylish look, use a thicker sewing thread if possible.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
The shoulder strap is thin and delicate since this bag was made with women in mind. It will look lovely matched with a skirt. When you have a lot of items inside, it can also be carried like a one-handle tote bag.

KF: Thank you very much, Anriko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Though you may want to add a zipper pocket for a backpack, this pocket is an easy-to-sew patch pocket. The opening of the pocket is cut diagonally. This way it is easy to take items in and out, while it is hard for other people to reach into the pocket.

For the seam around the tube, one side uses the selvage without the flat felled seam in order to keep it more flat. When the lining fabric is not in use, you can take advantage of the selvage.

3.

The bottom seam is secured by applying stitches. You can skip this process as it may be difficult to sew. The stitches reinforce the bottom and keep the shape more round.

Before attaching the opening fabric, please make sure to put the shoulder strap through the rectangle ring when basting these pieces.
