We interviewed Satomi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
This kind of fabric with large print motifs of New Year items is quite unique. The colors on the print are so vivid that I decided to make use of this character by creating New Year accessories and décor with different motifs.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The quilt batting in-between creates a coaster with soft texture and warm feel. With zigzag stitches in yellow thread all around, it adds extra glitz. Each pattern has a different size, so it’s fun to choose the piece for different purposes.

KF: What are some tips for making these pieces?
When cutting each motif, add a little extra allowance. The whole piece will be trimmed together later, so don’t be nervous about being precise when first cutting the lining fabric and quilt batting.

KF: How should we use these items in everyday situations?
Depending on the size, it can be used for coasters and pot holders. You can also place a Kagamimochi (decorative rice cake) or a flower vase on top. It will be cute to line up the pieces to create a garland using clips. Just casually placing pieces on the wall with masking tape might also be fun. As you will most likely be spending more time at home this winter, it will be enjoyable to pass time by making these New Year décor pieces by hand.

KF: Thank you very much, Satomi! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Instructions

1.

Cut the motifs along with the lining fabric and quilt batting in same size. ※Quilt batting for placemat is optional. If added, it creates fluffiness.

2.

Place the quilt batting in-between the coaster garland outer and lining fabrics.
※ Allow for a little extra seam as the excess seam will be cut off later once all the pieces are sewn together with straight stitches.

3.

Sew all around the pattern.

4.

Cut off excess seam, leaving 5mm of seam from stitch line.

5.

Apply zigzag stitches using yellow thread.
※ If desired, you can use red and white or metallic thread. They will equally look pretty.

6.

You can add a thick thread as you like♪

7.

With the front sides facing each other, sew together the outer and lining fabrics of the placemat at 5mm from the edge.
※ Don’t forget to leave a 10cm opening for turning!

8.

Turn it inside out and make clean corners. Apply stitches all the way around, and complete!
