  • Fabric (Lining Fabric): 80㎝×40㎝

Size: 39cm (l) 35cm (w)

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
These cats appeared to be quite unique on the photo! Seeing them actually on the fabric, each one of them looked even more charming. In order to make the most of this pattern, I came up with a large square bag with the surface entirely covered with cat prints.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The charm of this bag is the cut-out circular handle. The bag’s shape is simple, yet it has a pocket on the inside. Taking advantage of the black color of the pattern, the opening is wrapped with black bias binding tape to give a crisp look.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
For the cut-out circular handle, it is best to sew the curve slowly. You will get a beautiful curved finish by cutting fine slits almost to the edge of the seam when turning the piece over.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
It is large enough to comfortably hold an A4-sized file horizontally, making it convenient for carrying files and other items. It is reversible, so you can use the black side for work and the cat side for fun.
Folded in half, it can be used like a clutch bag. Another fun feature is that you can see the cat through the handle window.

KF: Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!

Piping Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This is a piping bag that can be made with a 50 cm single-piece fabric. The treatment of seam and creation of handles can be done simultaneously. The fabric used for this bag is from the “echino” series designed by Etsuko Furuya, a textile designer. Featuring cat motifs, this fabric was created for “Cat’s Day” on February 22. Among the stylishly combined dots and cat patterns, you will find cats with glasses hidden in the design. This structured cotton linen canvas fabric with tension can be used not only for bags, but also for aprons, throw pillow covers, and miscellaneous accessories in a wide range of applications.

Fabric shown for this sample:EYX-90000-900B

Materials:

  • Fabric: 110cm wide x 50cm

Size:22.5cm (l) 26cm (w) 10cm (d)

We interviewed Yui about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
The cats drawn with a realistic touch look lovely, and the placement of the dots and colors are stylish! I wanted to make a simple tote bag featuring these motifs.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
Since the fabric is structured, I thought it would be nice to make a bag from a single piece of fabric. I designed a piping bag that treats the seam and creates the handle simultaneously. The fabric is fully utilized to produce the handles, and they are just the right length to be carried over the shoulder.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
Even if you are not good at piping, it is easy to sew with only straight lines with 1.5cm width, so please try it. If you use temporary glue, you will be able to complete without mistakes. When sewing the bottom of the bag, cut the frayed threads neatly so that they will not stick out when the bag is turned inside out.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
It will look very stylish when matched with a simple outfit. It is large enough to hold a wallet, phone, and other essentials, so I think it is perfect for daily use.

Frilled Drawstring Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

*All Rights Reserved. Please refrain from the unauthorized use of project photos.

This drawstring bag is made of a reversible jacquard fabric, with three pieces alternately combined. Depending on how you tie the string, it can be used as a tote bag or a shoulder bag. The fabric used for this bag is “Anpan,” a representative pattern of the “MUDDY WORKS” series. The jacquard woven in Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture, the birthplace of Banshu weaving, is soft and has a unique sheen. With the small Anpan (Japanese sweet bean bun) pattern, it can be used in a variety of ways, such as for clothing and scarves.

Design & Work: Satomi Takei

Fabric shown for this sample: EKX-139-1A

Materials:

  • Fabric: 34cm x 66cm
  • Fusible Interfacing (medium weight) (RakuHari Presion Interfacing): 28cm x 40cm
  • Artificial Leather Tape: 2.5cm wide x 37cm
  • Waxed Cord: 0.3cm diameter x 1.8m

Size:25.5cm (l) 28cm (w)

We interviewed Satomi about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
This jacquard fabric is very soft and relatively thin, so I made a ruffled drawstring bag with beautiful gathering. The bag is designed in a simple form without a gusset so that the Anpan pattern will stand out.

KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
Taking advantage of the reversible fabric design, three pieces are sewn together alternately on the front and back sides to play with the fabric. The lining side is a single piece of fabric applied with a convenient interfacing (Presion). It is a very easy process, making the back side beautiful. By attaching the tape on the sides from the front, the shape of the bag becomes more solid and it changes its look into a structured bag.

KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
Adjust the opening for the string according to the size of the string.

KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
It is even easier to use if you add a pocket inside. By tying the string in a different way, you can carry it easily like a tote bag. In addition, if you pull only one string, it becomes a shoulder strap, which is very convenient. It will make me happy if you can make many bags in various colors and patterns and use them to accessorize your styling.

KF: Thank you very much, Satomi! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!
